TV actor Ashish Kapoor, renowned for his performances in successful Hindi serials such as Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai, Dekha Ek Khwaab, and Sasural Simar Ka 2, has been arrested in Pune on charges of rape. The incident occurred in the second week of August 2025, when the complainant visited a house party in Delhi. In her complaint, as per her assertion, Kapoor had allegedly attacked her within a bathroom at the party. She had first registered a First Information Report on August 11, identifying not just Kapoor but also a friend, the friend’s wife, and two unknown individuals. In further statements, she however changed her allegations and accused Kapoor alone of the sexual assault.
The complainant also claimed that the incident was videotaped, although police have made it clear that no such video has been discovered until now. What the investigators do have are CCTV footage and eyewitness testimony, which indicates that Kapoor and the woman went into the washroom together and that there was an altercation both inside and outside. The complainant has also stated that the wife of Kapoor’s friend attacked her after coming out of the bathroom, and that it was this woman who eventually called the police control room.
Once the FIR was registered, police started tracing Kapoor. He was initially traced to Goa but subsequently shifted to Pune, where he was finally arrested on September 3, 2025. His arrest has rocked the television world, considering his celebrity career. The Instagram account of the actor has since been deleted, which many feel was a response to the scandal.
Currently, the Delhi police are still investigating. The evidence at hand is security footage and witness statements; however, doubt is raised regarding the non-existence of the claimed video and the changing versions of the complainant’s testimony. Whether or not Kapoor will be formally charged will be based on the development of the case in court, as police test the validity of the allegations and seek supportive evidence.
The case has attracted considerable public attention not only for the seriousness of the charges but also because Kapoor is a household name on Hindi television. His arrest serves to highlight current debate within the entertainment world over celebrity accountability and the attention that follows when one of them stands accused of a major offense.
