Nepal flood rescue operation
New Delhi, August 26, 2026: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has spoken with Nepal Prime Minister Balendra “Balen” Shah following devastating flash floods in Nepal and expressed condolences over the loss of lives.
During the conversation, Modi assured Shah that India is ready to provide all possible humanitarian assistance to Nepal as rescue and relief operations continue in the flood-affected areas.
The Indian Prime Minister said that the people of India stand in solidarity with Nepal during the crisis. He also indicated that Indian teams are coordinating closely with authorities involved in rescue and relief operations.
Severe flooding hits Nepal
The disaster has particularly affected Rasuwa district, near Nepal’s border with China. A sudden surge in the Bhote Koshi River caused extensive destruction, affecting settlements, roads and other infrastructure.
Reports indicate that the flooding was associated with an avalanche or ice-and-rock event upstream, rather than being caused simply by ordinary rainfall. The situation has complicated rescue operations because of damaged roads and difficult terrain.
The scale of the disaster has continued to emerge throughout Wednesday. Different reports have cited changing casualty and missing-person figures as authorities work to verify the situation. One of the latest reports said that hundreds of people, including foreign tourists, were reported missing, while fatalities had also risen as rescue teams searched affected areas.
India offers humanitarian assistance

India has said it is prepared to extend humanitarian assistance and support relief operations. The Indian Embassy in Kathmandu has also been coordinating with Nepalese authorities regarding Indian nationals affected by the disaster.
