In the IPL 2024 match between Kolkata Knight Riders (kkr) and Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), tensions escalated at Eden Gardens as Virat Kohli, the Former captain of RCB, expressed strong discontent towards the umpires after a controversial dismissal in Sunday’s match Here what’s happened.

Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s star batter Virat Kohli was involved in a controversy after he got engaged in an altercation with the umpires over a decision during the side’s Indian Premier League match against Kolkata Knight Riders at Eden Gardens on Sunday.
KKR’s pacer Harshit Rana bowled a full toss to Kohli in the third over of the innings, which seemed like an over-the-waist no ball.
However, Kohli mistimed it and was caught and bowled, which resulted in his dismissal.

Later, the on-field umpire decided to refer the decision to the third umpire, Michael Gough, who adjudged that the ball had dipped on the batter and hence, Kohli’s dismissal was termed as legal.
Kohli, who made 18 off seven deliveries, was unhappy with the decision and got into an argument with the umpire before departing. The 35-year-old cricketer was seen slamming his bat on the boundary rope while proceeding to the RCB dugout.
A heartbreak for RCB as they have lost the match by 1 run against KKR at the Eden Gardens, Kolkata. With 3 runs needed off the last ball, Phil Salt inflicted a brilliant run-out as RCB couldn’t complete 2 runs. Despite 21 runs needed of the last over, Karn Sharma slammed 3 sixes to bring KKR back into the game. While chasing the target of 223 runs, RCB came so close, yet missed out by 1-run margin.

Legal or illegal: The rule states that a no- ball occurs when the ball is delivered above the batter’s waist height at the popping crease. However the batter’s Position also matters. In Kohli’s case, the ball was indeed above his waist height when he struck it but he was standing outside the crease at the point of contact. Technology assessed the ball’s trajectory and determined that if Kohli had been inside his Popping crease, the ball would have passed him at a height of 0.9*2 meters. Since Kohli’s waist height was measured at 1.04 meters, the delivery was legal.
