Dr. Pramod Varma, the lead architect of Aadhaar, and Jeff Dean, the chief scientist at Google, spoke about a variety of artificial intelligence (AI) topics at a recent event called “Leaders Connect With Jeff Dean.” Dean highlighted Google’s early achievements in artificial intelligence, which began in 2001 with the release of cutting-edge spelling correction algorithms.
The discussion focused on the development of large-scale neural networks, which Dean and his associates began in 2012. By 2009–12, these networks demonstrated encouraging performance in domains like as speech recognition.
Recalling his time as a student in the 1990s, Dean talked about his lifelong interest in neural networks and the possibilities they present when combined with large amounts of processing capacity.
Dean’s optimistic assessment of India’s standing in the field of artificial intelligence stood out among the discussion’s highlights. Dean emphasised the value of integrating machine learning and artificial intelligence (AI) into university curricula after meeting bright and motivated students who were ready to learn about the technology during his visit.
In support of this viewpoint, Dr. Pramod Varma emphasised India’s unique approach to AI, which emphasises enhancing rather than displacing human abilities. He compared this to the West, where the prevailing conversation frequently centres on AI taking over human responsibilities. Varma emphasised that in order to help India’s sizable population, production, efficiency, and affordability must all rise.
Varma also supported democratising access to AI knowledge, resources, and technologies.In order to engage more Indians in the digital economy, he underlined the significance of incorporating AI into India’s efforts to develop its digital public infrastructure. Voice, language, health, and education are Varma’s top priorities for using AI to solve the disparities and varied requirements of India.
Varma recommended that while regulating AI, the emphasis should be on the calibre of services provided rather than only focusing on AI firms or technologies. He emphasised the need for a fair and well-rounded policy dialogue that takes into account the effects on society while promoting inclusive growth via transparent and ethical AI.
