Officials informed that Additional Labour Commissioner Madan Mohan Paik, one of the members of the State team, will remain in Chennai to coordinate with hospital authorities in Tamil Nadu.
Bhubaneswar: The Odisha government has confirmed that five migrant workers from the state have died and several others have been injured in an ammonia gas leak incident at a seafood processing and export unit in Tiruvallur, Tamil Nadu.
The deceased have been identified as Jimani Jiwang (19), Geetha Jiwang, Bhumiya Jiwang (22), Sibani (22), and Phulamani Juanga.
As of now, three of the deceased have been identified as being from Keonjhar district.
“Other details will be shared after the verification process is completed,” an official from the Labour Department told TNIE.
Labour and ESI Minister Ganesh Ram Singhkhuntia expressed grief over the incident and conveyed condolences to the bereaved families. He said the State government is on alert and in constant coordination with the Tamil Nadu administration to ensure proper medical care for the injured.
He also informed that a State team led by Special Secretary (Labour and ESI) Rajesh Agrawala has reached Chennai to coordinate relief and assistance efforts.

Singhkhuntia also assured compensation to the affected families as per government norms, and said those responsible for any lapses would face strict action after investigation.
Officials said post-mortems of two bodies have been completed at Thiruvallur Medical College and Hospital, while another is underway there. One post-mortem is being arranged at Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital, and another has been completed at Stanley Hospital.
After completion of all formalities, the bodies will be handed over to the families. Officials said Additional Labour Commissioner Madan Mohan Paik will remain in Chennai to coordinate with hospital authorities regarding post-mortem and related procedures.
Meanwhile, Rajesh Agrawala and Bhakta Bandhu Acharya will visit Tiruvallur to review the condition of injured workers receiving treatment in local hospitals. Around 130 affected workers have been accommodated in a nearby community hall, where necessary arrangements have been made.
Contacts have been established with senior Labour Department officials in Chennai and Tiruvallur to coordinate with the local administration and ensure proper assistance to the affected workers and their families.
