>>Odisha Student’s Death Sparks Outcry :
- A 20-year-old B.Ed student at Fakir Mohan (Autonomous) College in Balasore, Odisha, died on July 14, 2025, after setting herself on fire following alleged ignored complaints of sexual harassment by a professor. The student suffered 95% burns and succumbed to her injuries at AIIMS Bhubaneswar.
- The incident has triggered widespread outrage and protests across Odisha and India. The student had reportedly complained of sexual harassment by the Head of the Education Department, Sameer Kumar Sahu, to the college principal, Dillip Ghosh, and other authorities, but no action was taken. The student’s father also alleged that she was pressured to withdraw her complaint.
- A college student in Balasore, Odisha, tragically died after attempting self-immolation, alleging sexual harassment by a faculty member. Her death has ignited protests and a strong reaction from the Chief Minister, who has vowed action against the culprits. President Droupadi Murmu also visited the victim’s parents and called for justice.

- The student’s death has sparked significant political reactions. Eight opposition parties, led by the Congress, called for an Odisha bandh (state-wide shutdown) on July 17 to protest the incident and demand justice. They have also demanded the resignation of the State Higher Education Minister and a judicial investigation. Former Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik condemned the incident as “institutional betrayal”. Rahul Gandhi, Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, called it an “organised murder by the system” and criticised the BJP government.
- In response, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi announced an ex gratia of Rs 20 lakh for the victim’s family and ordered a thorough investigation, promising strict punishment for the culprits. Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan accused Rahul Gandhi of “cheap politics” and asserted that the BJP government prioritizes women’s safety.Â
- Both the principal, Dilip Ghosh, and the Head of the Education Department, Sameer Kumar Sahu, have been arrested in connection with the case. Ghosh was reportedly sent to 14-day judicial custody. The student’s body was cremated in her village in Balasore. Her mother has demanded capital punishment for the culprits.Â
