Delhi to D.C.
Air India’s September 1, 2025, suspension of its Delhi–Washington D.C. flights and the reasons why:

What’s Happening?
Air India is temporarily cancelling its flights between Delhi (DEL) and Washington, D.C. (IAD) from September 1, 2025, onwards.
This is a serious development for the airline, given that Washington D.C. is one of its key long-haul North American destinations.
Why Is the Route Being Suspended?
There are two main reasons for this move:
- Reduced Boeing 787 Fleet (Fleet Shortage)
Air India is in the midst of a large cabin retrofit programme for its fleet of 26 Boeing 787-8 Dreamliners.
These planes are being upgraded with new seats, inflight entertainment, and improved business class products as part of Air India’s overall Vihaan.AI transformation strategy.
But doing so involves keeping numerous 787s out of service at a time, which lowers the number of operational aircraft available for international flights.
Due to the long-haul and capital-intensive nature of the Delhi–Washington route, Air India is allocating planes to more demand-responsive or lucrative routes.

- Pakistan Airspace Closure
Pakistan has continued to close its airspace to Indian carriers since mid-2025 due to geopolitical tensions between the two nations.
This shutdown compels Indian planes flying to the west (e.g., to Europe and North America) to fly through longer routes, completely bypassing Pakistan.
For the Delhi–Washington corridor, this equated to a technical stopover in Vienna, Austria, introduced earlier in 2025 to shed payload and refuel.
The increased cost of fuel, time of crew, and longer flight times render the route operationally inefficient in the prevailing circumstances.
How Was the Route Previously Operated?
Originally operated as a non-stop service, the Delhi–Washington route was among Air India’s high-end North American services.
In the early part of 2025, after the closure of airspace, the airline converted the operation into a one-stop over Vienna to cope with fuel loads and bypass Pakistani airspace.
It was still not sustainable, though, due to lower-than-anticipated load factors and soaring operating expenses.

Effect on Travelers
If you have made reservations on this route after September 1, 2025:
Affected passengers will be contacted by Air India.
You will be provided with:
Full refunds
Or alternative Washington connections through other North American hubs.
Connections through the following hubs are still available for Air India, which offers direct services to various U.S. cities:
Route Option
Delhi → New York (JFK/EWR) Daily.
Delhi → Chicago (ORD) Ongoing.
Delhi → San Francisco (SFO) Ongoing.
Delhi → Vancouver / Toronto For Canada-based connections.
Passengers flying to Washington D.C. can be rebooked with partner carriers (e.g., United, Delta, or Alaska) for ultimate leg connections.

When Would the Route Resume?
Air India has given no timeline for restarting Delhi–Washington service.
However:
The Boeing 787 retrofit program is set to run through the end of 2026.
The Pakistani airspace issue remains unresolved and tense.
Consequently, a return to normal service might not occur before 2026.
Background: Air India’s Fleet and Network Strategy
As part of its privatized ownership under the Tata Group, Air India is:
Upgrading its whole fleet (wide-body and narrow-body).
To take delivery of new Airbus A350s and Boeing 777s/787s during 2025–2026.
Focusing on money-making routes and reducing temporarily where there are limitations.
